For the animals, all stress levels have seeped away. For our part, we’re lucky to have them. Thought you’d like to know.

I was the ten-year old girl with my family that adopted the two cats Koto and Feret. (Now known as Blaze) I wanted to write this letter to tell you about how greatly Blaze and Koto have changed since we adopted them. As I write this, Blaze lingers underneath my desk, rubbing against my hands and legs. Koto is upstairs, probably looking out a window or taking a nap. I can hardly believe these are the same cats that hid behind our couch the first night at their new home.

Amazingly, Blaze was the first one to accept us, due to Koto’s skill in hiding places. In our cabinets, behind sinks, anywhere there was a closed space, Koto was in there. Blaze was forced to hide in the places closer to us and therefore, he bonded with us quicker. I call him a mama’s boy because he’s always coming up to us, wanting to be petted or played with. His meows are so cute! We managed to decode the meanings in them: There was the frustrated one when birds fluttered outside the window in front of him, the one when he was trying to call his brother, and the one when he’d jump up onto the chair next to me, wanting food. His favorite hobbies involve watching out any window, beating up his green mouse that barely has a tail anymore, and doing what we call kitty-cat race tracks at night. This was when Blaze would chase Koto down the stairs, then Koto would turn on him and chase Blaze up the stairs. And so on.

Koto was a little more complicated. Only recently did he start coming out from under his newest hiding spot, underneath my parent’s bed. It was about a week ago I found out his transformation started. It was 8:30 at night and I was in the bathroom brushing and flossing my teeth, when Blaze walked in. nothing special. He always did that. I went back to flossing my teeth when Blaze tried to bat down one end of the floss. I smiled and decided to finish flossing my teeth. A couple minutes later, I was sprawled across the bathroom floor, dangling a piece of string for Blaze to play with. Just as Blaze got tired and wanted to take a nap, another pair of ears appeared. No! It couldn’t be, Koto didn’t go anywhere people were involved. But it was Koto alright. He looked at the string flicking back and forth and dropped into a hunter’s crouch. And so my relationship with him began. It first started out with him only letting me pet him when he was playing with the floss, then he decided I was allowed to pet him only if I had played with him that day. Now he seeks pets from me more than daily, following me from room to room. I woke up one day to find Koto just staring at the bed I was in. I tell my mom that it was magical floss, but she thinks I have a magical touch. I shrug. Maybe I do, maybe I don’t. But it’s not important to me. I just like that Koto finally hatched from inside his little shell.

So here ends my little letter about our cats. It surprises me even now how they were just three months ago. Here’s a little picture of our two little fur-balls. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,
Natasha

Sadie, as I now call her, was difficult to get to pose for the camera! She took one week to the day to stay out long enough from under the bed to get some photos. But we are making great progress. She is eating well, using the litter box and has enjoyed being brushed daily.
I have moved her food to the kitchen to force her to be sociable and it works for the most part. She has been introduced to the whole house except for the basement. She stills runs to the safety of “her room” but comes out more and more.
We have purchased catnip, Wellness brand food for indoor cats, and a laser toy. She does enjoy her bed so I will keep it- It seems to be comforting to her.
Will keep you updated. Thanks for all the support and advice.
