The Berkshire Humane Society is blessed with many people who support our work in hundreds of different ways.
But we are especially gratified when, in this self-centered day and age, young people go out of their
way to do wonderful things for the helpless animals in their community.
The Doggie Party
I would like to personally thank Raphaela Kramer and Abra Lipton for all the planning and effort that went into making the
“Doggie Party” such a huge success. These two lovely young ladies approached me in January this year to do a community service
project for their Bat Mitzvahs that would help the animals at the Berkshire Humane Society. The girls decide a “Doggie Party”
would be perfect.
They arranged to hold the event on the lawn of Knesset Israel in Pittsfield on May 18th from 10am until 12pm. Raphael and
Abra planned games for dogs and their owners, arranged for prizes and even had refreshments on hand for the crowd to purchase.
They had many bowls of water available on the lawn for the dozen and more dogs that attend the event. Over forty owners came with
all types of canines companions to join in the celebration. The families played Frisbee and lawn bubbles while their dogs frolicked
by their sides. “Sugar” a Bichon Frise, dressed up in a lobster costume while another poodle type wore a ballerina tutu for the
costume contest.
The weather held long enough for the fun and games to be enjoyed and at the end, Raphael and Abra presented the Berkshire Humane
Society with $535.35 in cash donations and another $300 in wish list items for the shelter, collected from the generous guest of
the “Doggie Party”. They are wonderful examples of kindness and determination to the community and can serve as an inspiration to
other children who want to do something for homeless animals at the Berkshire Humane Society.
Here are the stories of a few wonderful Kids Who Care:
Who Cares? Ana, Alaina, Ally and Mollie do!
They sold lemonade for two days and purchased much needed wish list items with the proceeds.
Included with their donation was the following letter:
Dear BHS

is not a lot, but we hope it helps. We wish the best of luck to the BHS and its
animals.
Sincerely,
Anna, Mollie, Ally and Alaina

Happily, they chose the Berkshire Humane Society.
Many thanks, Theo, John, Willie, Justin, and Harry, for your hard work and for your
generosity to the shelter. We deeply appreciate it.

Bar Mitzvah Celebration Reaches Berkshire Humane
Who Cares? Willie, an 8th grader recently included BHS in his Bar Mitzvah celebration.
As part of the Bar Mitzvah, young men such as Willie may choose to perform a “mitzvah,” that is, a good deed. Willie’s good deed was to help the shelter. Willie set up donation boxes in the Community Center in Lenox and at Hevreh. He also sent out a letter to his friends. It read:
Dear Friends,
I am having a food drive for the Berkshire Humane Society, helping cats, dogs, and rabbits. I’m having it May 6-13 at Hevreh. Everyone should contribute to this because some people in Berkshire County are so poor that they have to choose to feed their pets or themselves. So by putting some animal food in the box at the Community Center [or Hevreh], you are letting a person feed both their pet and themselves
Willie’s friends proved to be as generous as he is. On Wednesday, May 23, Willie brought a wide assortment of pet food to the shelter. As Willie wished, it will be added to our pet food bank to help those experiencing temporary financial difficulties. A good deed indeed!
Our thanks to you, Willie, for thinking of us at such a special time and in such a generous way. And our congratulations to you on your Bar Mitzvah!
