Introducing "Meet Your Match" at Berkshire Humane Society

You're a person. You have a person-ality.
Dogs are canines. So they must have a "canine-ality".

THE MEET YOUR MATCH CANINE-ALITY ADOPTION PROGRAM was created by Emily Weiss, Ph.D. in conjunction with the ASPCA.

It is a multi-faceted approach designed to increase the likelihood that shelter dogs, six months of age and over, will be accepted into their new homes as welcomed members of the family.

Matching the "Canine-ality" of the dogs in our shelter with the "Person-ality" of the adopter(s) lays the foundation for the human/canine bond to develop, increasing the potential for a successful, permanent placement.

The Canine-ality Assessment goes beyond behavior or aggression evaluations by providing you with information about the individual needs of each dog. It consists of five tests administered to the dog to determine his general Canine-ality, including friendliness, playfulness, energy level and motivation or drive.

Each dog is scored and then categorized as follows:
  • Purple = Easy

Typical Descriptions of a Purple Dog: Couch Potato, Constant Companion, or Teacher's Pet.

  • Orange = Average

Typical Descriptions of an Orange Dog: Busy Bee, WallFlower, or Goofball.

  • Green = High Maintenance

Typical Descriptions of a Green Dog: Free Spirit, Go-Getter, or Life of the Party.
The three descriptions are used to describe the dog's canine-ality in terms the adopter can relate to. These color-coded descriptions are used for the dog's cage card and to help guide you through the available Canines on our website to help you Meet Your Match!
