Berkshire Humane Welcomes New Camp Directors

Hello,

Lizzy and I would like to introduce ourselves. Karen Karlberg retired, and we have been hired to fill her position- which means we’re also the new co-directors for Camp Humane!

We’ve begun registering campers for Camp Humane 2013, and we hope you and your child, or children, will join us for another exciting and educational “Animal Experience.”

This year Berkshire Humane Society (BHS) will once again offer five sessions for children entering third through eighth grade, with the first session beginning July 15. Each session runs Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, and is limited to 20 campers.

However, while Camp Humane will continue to provide campers with opportunities to work directly with shelter animals and learn from shelter staff at BHS, each session will include an emphasis on a particular category of animal. We believe this change will provide campers with a more focused learning opportunity each session and insure that each year will be different if they decide to return. Here’s our schedule:

Grade 3 – Companion Animals – July 15th~19th

Grade 4 – Farm Animals – July 22nd~26th

Grade 5 – Working Animals – July 29th~August 2nd

Grade 6 – Ecology / Wildlife – August 5th~9th

Grades 7/8 – Zoology / Wildlife – August 12th~16th

Activities will include presentations and hands-on demonstrations by animal experts; field trips to farms and sanctuaries; animal-related arts and crafts; and journaling and reflection time.

The goals of Camp Humane include 1) instructing children about proper care and responsibility for domestic animals as pets and companions; 2) introducing children to working animals, farm animals, and wildlife as well as educating them about the many ways these animals enrich our lives; and 3) teaching children about the important work and mission of BHS.

Tuition is $260 if received before June 7th. Families who enroll more than one child receive a $10 discount for each camper. A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available.

For more information or to download a registration package, please visit Camp Humane and, of course, if you have any questions, feel free to call us at 413-447-7878, ext. 28 (Mary) or 29 (Lizzy).

Best,

Lizzy and Mary
