February is “Prevent a Litter Month”

February 3, 2011 Pittsfield, MA…The Berkshire Humane Society is distributing vouchers for spay/neuter surgeries to promote “Prevent a Litter Month”. Eligible pet owners can come to the shelter at 214 Barker Road in Pittsfield or Purradise, cat adoption center at 301 Stockbridge Road in Gt. Barrington during normal business hours. The only requirement is a valid license/ID and proof of residence in Berkshire County. Pet owners are responsible for making the surgery appointment at a participating veterinary hospital, and must pay the balance of the cost of surgery after the voucher had been applied. The vouchers have no cash value, with BHS reimbursing the veterinary hospitals directly for the surgery; $60 towards a feline spay/neuter surgery and $75 for a canine surgery.

The vouchers are helpful to pet owners who cannot afford to spay and neuter their cats and dogs and are available on a first come basis until the funds are gone. “The funding for the Spay/Neuter vouchers has once again been made available by the Hilton C. Hamm Trust:, according to John Perreault, Executive Director of BHS. He added, “Since this program started over 15 years ago, The BHS Spay/Neuter Program has helped over 2,900 families spay or neuter their pets. It is especially important to reach out to those pet owners who are affected by this difficult economy.”

Spaying and neutering cats and dogs will not only cut down on the problem of pet overpopulation, but it can also make a pet a more pleasant companion by cutting down on their odor, scent marking, and aggression levels. The surgery can help keep your pet healthier by reducing the risk of certain infections and several forms of cancer and it can also add years to your pet’s life.
